Your dishwasher has a hidden filter. It's probably gross.
How to clean a dishwasher filter
Most dishwashers made since 2010 have a manual filter under the bottom spray arm. Twist it out, rinse it under warm water with a soft brush, and lock it back in once a month.
Unplug or switch off the dishwasher first. Don't use bleach or wire brushes on the mesh; warm water and dish soap are enough.
Never mix cleaning products. Bleach plus ammonia, vinegar or other acids releases toxic gases. Use one product at a time, rinse between them, ventilate, and unplug appliances before you clean them.
Step by step
- Pull out the bottom rack
- Twist the cylindrical filter a quarter turn anticlockwise and lift it out
- Rinse the filter and mesh plate under warm water, scrubbing gently with a soft brush and a drop of dish soap
- Wipe the sump underneath with a damp cloth
- Drop the filter back in and twist until it clicks
