The secret 'machine care' button nobody presses
How to use the dishwasher clean cycle
Many dishwashers have a Machine Care, Self Clean or Sanitize program. Run it empty once a month with a dishwasher cleaner tablet or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack.
Use either a commercial cleaner or vinegar, never both, and never add bleach to a vinegar cycle: bleach plus acid releases chlorine gas.
Never mix cleaning products. Bleach plus ammonia, vinegar or other acids releases toxic gases. Use one product at a time, rinse between them, ventilate, and unplug appliances before you clean them.
Step by step
- Empty the dishwasher and clean the filter first
- Check the manual or control panel for Machine Care, Self Clean or Sanitize
- Put a dishwasher cleaner product in the detergent slot, or one cup of white vinegar upright on the top rack
- Run the program on its hottest setting with nothing else inside
